Funeral services for  Henry Carter, 98, of Jefferson will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday November 22, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Jefferson with Dr. Jeff Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Memorial Park under the direction of Haggard Funeral Home. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

 Henry Carter was born June 30, 1919 to Nathan and Ruby Jolly Carter.  He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1936. 

He served in the army as a Staff Sargent in WWII.  During his military career Mr. Carter was at the Normandy Beach Invasion on D-Day.  After the war ended, he returned to Jefferson where he owned and operated the City Grocery Store.

Mr. Carter was a charter member of the Jefferson Masonic Lodge #38 for over 70 years.  He was a member of the Scottish Rites and the Shriners where he enjoyed cooking at annual Shriners Chili Supper each year for over 60 years.  He was actively involved at First Baptist Church where he served as an ordained Deacon and Sunday school teacher.

In 1978 Mr. Carter met and married the love of his life Dorothy Simpson.  They were married 40 years.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Simpson Carter, three step children, Stewart Simpson and wife Debby of Jefferson, Texas, Susan Collins and husband John of Marshall, Texas, Becky Dicke and husband Rock of Mason, Texas, two grandchildren, Jason Bradley and wife Tasha of Mason, Texas  and Sunny Hefler and husband Coby of Lindale, Texas,  six great grandchildren Angie, Hunter, Fisher, Tanner, Cami and Alison.  He also leaves two nieces, Nancy Head, Susan Geddie and one nephew James Stanley Carter.

Preceding Mr. Carter in death were his parents, brothers and sisters.
