Funeral Services for Coach V.P. “Phoney” Harrell, 88, of Jefferson, Texas will be held on Saturday July 11, 2026, in the First Methodist Church in Jefferson, Texas at 2:00pm with Rev. Mark Crim officiating and under the direction of Haggard Funeral Home.
He was born on June 22, 1938, to Maggie and Floyd Harrell in Jefferson Texas on the banks of the big Cypress Bayou and passed away peacefully on July 2, 2026, surrounded by loving family and friends in Jefferson Texas.
Mr. Harrell graduated from Jefferson High School, Panola College, and Stephen F. Austin State University, ultimately earning a master’s degree in education with a focus on mid-management. He made many friends along the way and his outgoing personality and easy-going demeanor made everyone feel welcomed by him.
Coach Harrell dedicated his life to athletics and education. He had a storied career, building a legacy as one of the most winning basketball coaches in Texas history. He took pride in encouraging his students to achieve excellence both on the court and off. He was known for his quick wit, disciplined teams and strategic mind. He took immense pride in the young men and women he molded, many of whom went on to become coaches and educators themselves. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication, pride and teamwork that will live on in the hearts of his former players.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Lanice Morton Harrell, and five siblings, Richard Harrell, Bill Harrell, William Edward “Wimpy” Harrell, Gene Harrell, and Paul Harrell.
Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved daughters; Dr. Jana Harrell Ponder and Jill Harrell Walther and husband Ves. He was a proud grandfather to his three grandchildren; Ryan Shelton, Trent Walther and Cole Walther. He is also survived by two sister-in-laws; Dr. Carol Harrell and Melba Morton, as well as many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
