Curtis Owens Obituary

Memorial Services for Curtis Owens, 91, of Avinger, Texas will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 10:00am in the Cpt. Wm. Perry Chapel of Haggard Funeral Home with the honorable Judge Leward LaFleur officiating and under the direction of Haggard Funeral Home.

Curtis Owens, 91, of Avinger, Texas, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and unwavering devotion to his family and community.

Born in Dawson, Texas on November 23, 1933, to Grady and Lillie Owens, he was one of seven children and was raised in Hubbard, Texas. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1955, serving honorably as a Private First Class in the 2nd Infantry Division, stationed in Alaska. After completing his active duty in 1957, he continued his service in the Army Reserves for two more years.

A man of great dedication and skill, he spent 33 years with Bell Helicopter, where he started as a truck driver proudly transporting elite helicopters across the nation. He then worked his way up to supervisor of transportation. His work ethic was unmatched, and his leadership earned the respect of all who worked with him.

In June of 1954, he married the love of his life, Mary Burton. Their marriage spanned 66 years, filled with love, laughter, and deep devotion. Together they raised two children, Jerry and Lisa, and later welcomed four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren into their growing family.

He was a man with a heart the size of Texas—strong, dependable, tough as nails, and always ready with a smile or a helping hand. He had a gift for lifting the spirits of those around him, and his love for his family and animals was endless. He was known for his fierce domino and poker skills, his joy in tinkering with his golf cart, collecting coins and model cars, and his excitement for the Kentucky Derby each year. He also had a gentle side, caring deeply for animals and taking pride in the simplest pleasures of life.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary, his parents Grady and Lillie Owens, his six siblings, and many cherished friends.

He is survived by his daughter Lisa (Tim) of Avinger, TX, and his son Jerry of Fort Worth, TX; grandchildren Nicole Jones of Keller, TX, Andrea Gladney (King) of Hallsville, TX, Annisa Owens of Keller, TX, and Sam Moren of Avinger, TX; and six great-grandchildren who will carry his memory with them always.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Friends of Jefferson Animals, a cause close to his heart.

He was a great man who gave so much and asked for so little. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the family he adored, and the love he spread generously to everyone he met.
