Edith Joann (Dewitt) Shimic, formerly of the Mims community on Lake O’ the Pines near Avinger, Texas passed away Thursday, May 23, 2024 in Houston, Texas. Born March 22, 1930, in Louisiana, she was 94 years old. She was the daughter of late Ms. Georgia Amison Moore.
Joann was a beautiful lady who had a deep love for God, her family and entrepreneurship. She loved spending time with her family, friends & neighbors. Joann loved life and she served others in her community through her church and the Jefferson Rotary Club. She and her late husband David ‘Dave’ Shimic loved to go on adventures in their RV with their friends. She loved having the opportunity to travel to Japan as a Rotary Club representative but nothing overshadowed Joann’s love and admiration for her two late Sons, Wesley and Stephen. She proudly and successfully operated a restaurant, MeOwn (yes, it was her own) and a garden center, Shimic Nursery. Though she could barely speak during her last days, she would look eye to eye to others and give you that look that said, “I love you.” Her passion to know and accept people was so obvious in her interactions. Let’s not forget her passion for a good hamburger!
She met her husband of 48 years, Maurice David Shimic, in Bossier City, LA at Barksdale Air Force base. They soon after lived in Pasadena, TX, Terre Haute, IN then Lake O’ the Pines (Avinger, TX). Their two Sons, Charles Wesley Shimic and Stephen Eugene Shimic, her Brother James Wesley Ramsey and her daughter-in-law Beverly Shimic preceded her in death.
Survivors include: Nephew Craig Ramsey; Niece Kay Ramsey-Copeland; Daughter-in-Law Donna (Shimic) Shephard; Sister-In-Law Sue Ramsey; Joann’s five Grandchildren: Lynette Shimic, David Wesley Shimic, Josef Shimic and his wife Kayble, Darla (Shimic) Okada and her husband Mike, James Shimic and his wife Sabrina Fechtner; and six Great Grandchildren.
Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at 11:30am at Mims Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery of 13714 FM729, Avinger, TX 75630.
