Perry Chapel of Haggard Funeral Home with Doctor Jeff Taylor officiating. A time of visitation is scheduled from 10:00AM until noon at Haggard Funeral home prior to the funeral service.

Edmond Ray Schellinger was born July 6, 1926 in Jefferson, Marion County, Texas to Charlie Thomas and Mary Nancy (Grubbs) Schellinger and passed away November 9, 2019 in Jefferson, Marion County, Texas. Ray was the 4th generation of the Schellinger family to call Jefferson home.

Ray was well known to be an avid supporter of the Jefferson Bulldogs. His patronage to his home team began while attending Jefferson High School in the early 1940’s when he was a two-year letterman wearing jersey #1 for the football team.

Upon graduation from Jefferson High School, Ray enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the height of World War II and served his country proudly. After the bombing of Nagasaki, Kyushu, Japan in August 1945, Ray’s unit was detached to Nagasaki Harbor in September 1945 to assist in the rescue of the area where the atomic bombs had been deployed, this was quite a task to ask of a 19 year old sailor.

Ray married Cleta Jo McElroy on December 23, 1948 and the couple celebrated 68 years of marriage, until Jo’s death in December 2016. Ray was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson, foreman on numerous oil rigs for Dan Lester Drilling and a 60 year member of the Jefferson Masonic Lodge No 38 af&am.

Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Cleta Jo Jean (McElroy) Schellinger; parents, Charlie Thomas and Mary Nancy (Grubbs) Schellinger and sister, Clemmie Ceylon (Schellinger) (Britt) Taylor.

Ray is survived by his son, William Thomas (Tommy) Schellinger and wife Maurine; son, James Alan Schellinger and wife Janice; grandchildren, Michael Alan Schellinger, James (Jase) Alan Schellinger Jr. (Taylor), Stephen Thomas Schellinger (Kari), Patrick Brian Schellinger (Emily), Jeffrey Noel Schellinger, Staci Nicole Schellinger (Jeff Hogg); great-grandchildren, Christopher Brian, Liam Alexander, Connor Ray Schellinger, Kyle Scott, Beau Landry, Rece McCoy, Bodi Ryan Schellinger, Tegan, Tyson, Tinley Harmon, Levi Thomas and Elijah Matthew Schellinger; sister, Peggy Ann (Schellinger) Rose and husband Wylie; brother, Donald Britt Schellinger and wife Ella May as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
