Funeral Services for Sammie DeSpain, 93, of Jefferson will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at 11am in the Cpt. Wm. Perry Chapel of Haggard Funeral Home with Bro. Shane Shaddix officiating and under the direction of Haggard Funeral Home. A time of visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, from 5:30 to 7:30pm in the Cpt. Wm. Perry Chapel of Haggard Funeral Home.
Sammie was born on June 25, 1932, to Earl Wallace and Goldie Whitworth Wallace in Avinger, Texas and passed away on January 14, 2026, in Jefferson, Texas.
Six generations of her family are interred in Avinger and the surrounding area. She was raised in Jefferson, where her parents owned the grocery store now known as the site of the Knight Light Tavern. The family relocated to Lubbock while she was in high school, at which time she met her husband and had two children.
She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Tech University. Toward the end of her career, she returned to Jefferson to care for her ailing mother and became active once again in community life. Her contributions include restoring the Hodge Plantation, formerly the home of Tommy Taylor, brother of Lady Bird Johnson; serving as an honorary member of the Garden Club; and holding the position of President of the Historical Commission.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her son, Bob DeSpain.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Debbie Picard; grandsons, Michael and wife Tracy Vincent, Daniel and wife Lauren Vincent; great grandchild, Maxton Vincent.
